Connecting the dots...

Just trying to do the math here...You obviously can't count too closely, but I am trying to understand the magnitude of the task for authorities in New Orleans

New Orleans is a city of approx 480,000 population.  Estimates are that approximately 80% of the residents obeyed the mandatory pre-K evac order, so we should count on approximately 96,000 residents at the time of the storm.  The Red Cross is estimating that they have 40K in various shelters, so I conclude authorities are trying to locate and rescue or evacuate some 55,000 people.  Kind  of helps me understand why they're really not even trying to recover the dead, but are focusing on search and rescue efforts.  God help them.
