Something about bicycling

So, I was riding on the trainer tonight, watching a movie...incidentally not a very good one...and I remembered something about bicycling.  Riding a bike on the road, for me, is like surmounting a series of mental obstacles:  I usually hit one about 10 or 12 minutes in, really when I'm just getting warmed up, and I feel like something must be wrong, I can't really be tired already.  But if I were to judge from my senses, I'm definitely not going to be able to keep the pace.  Usually I'm riding with a bunch of other people, so I'm ashamed to slack off, and I keep going.  At about 16 or 17 minutes the feeling disappears and I feel fine.  Making the mileage at a decent pace on a long ride is just about coming up on a series of these kind of physical/mental hurdles, realizing they're primarily mental, and continuing to be disciplined about keeping up my cadence, judicious gear selection, timing and keeping the pedals moving.  I definitely have physical limitations due to my lack of fitness (such as the two muscle cramps you can get while moving 17-18 mph and tethered to the pedals-good times)...but the obstacles I'm talking about aren't what limit my mileage, they just make me think its time to quit.

My new steed (should arrive this week).  Fantastic deal from bikesdirect.com.  It comes well reviewed and with a very good group (Shimano's new ultegra group, the 6700) and a compact drivetrain.  And the frame is Titanium.  Ought to be a huge upgrade over my '01 Trek 1000 (an entry level aluminum frame bike that I've slowly upgraded with off-brand parts over the years and which currently sports 105 brifters that only half work.) Yep, the Venerable Trek1000 just got downchecked from flight status and is now serving training duty in the garage.

Getting back into cycling this season.

Hannah and I would like to announce that we are expecting our fourth child in april/may of 2007.  It is very early, so we don't know the gender of the baby yet, but would like everyone to know.

Happy Labor Day

Have a great holiday weekend, I'm planning on getting ready for the TMOM's garage sale (http://www.tulsamoms.org/gs.htm).  The garage sale is a great opportunity for parents of multiples or non multiples.  There's a ton of stuff available, and some very nice clothes, toys, furniture, and assorted baby things.  There's even some clothes for adults available.

We're selling a bunch of clothes and assorted items from all the kids.  We've got way too much stuff that they've outgrown!  All our proceeds will be going towards supplies for a playhouse I'll be building for the kids in our back yard.

It's a Birthday

My girls turn 3 today.  Hard to believe we brought them home three years ago.  They're such a joy to Hannah and me.

Classmate missing

I believe a college and high school classmate of mine has suffered a diving accident. Still hoping, but fear the worst.

Here are my two pistols

So, I've purchased my second pistol so far. This ought to be it for me, although my wife and I are still looking around for one for her.

"Oh those hypocritical christians..."

I've read all kinds of comments on the web from various people/organizations, all talking about how hypocritical christians are and how certain the respective opiner is that this local pastor will be vilified for his lapse.

The quotes in the linked article,  from leaders associated with his church, are encouraging on that score.

Is there anyone out there?

Are there any other bloggers in Owasso?  I've searched but haven't found anyone blogging so far about owasso politics and issues.  Since I've got a stake here now, (live in Owasso) I'd love to communicate and learn from others who've been active here locally.

Does anyone have experience with the Bersa .380 Thunder Pistol?

I've been looking around for a basic home defense pistol for my wife, saw some good reviews on this pistol . Has anyone else out there purchased one of these? What do you think of it?

Connecting the dots...

Just trying to do the math here...You obviously can't count too closely, but I am trying to understand the magnitude of the task for authorities in New Orleans

New Orleans is a city of approx 480,000 population.  Estimates are that approximately 80% of the residents obeyed the mandatory pre-K evac order, so we should count on approximately 96,000 residents at the time of the storm.  The Red Cross is estimating that they have 40K in various shelters, so I conclude authorities are trying to locate and rescue or evacuate some 55,000 people.  Kind  of helps me understand why they're really not even trying to recover the dead, but are focusing on search and rescue efforts.  God help them.

Seems like Asplundh fulfilled its notification requirements months ago.  And how's "reasonable effort" to accomodate homeowner's desires defined?
